Honoured with different
awards, including Rabindra Puraskar awarded by the
Government of Tripura, Sri Das is working hard for the
promotion of Rabindra Sangeet in correct form for
the next generation. Sri Samir Kanti Das, who himself is
an institution, has won the hearts of a number of
Rabindra Sangeet lovers, not only in Tripura, but
everywhere he visited with the songs of Tagore.
Sri Samir Das came to Tripura
in the year 1955 and got admission in M.B.B.College,
Agartala as a student of 3rd year. He was a
charming person at that time and even at this age he looks
lively and enthusiastic. He always has an immense love for
Rabindrasangeet. At his arrival to Agartala, Sri
Das got a huge popularity in the field of light-music. He
has had a beautiful expression in his singing. Even now he
is holding that life, boldness and melody in his singing.

During his young age
Samir Das and a group of his friends used to organize
various cultural functions and Sri Das used to be one of
the leading singers of those functions. At that time he
used to sing all types of light melodies. Gradually, he
became tilted towards Rabindrasangeet. He never
imitated any famous Rabindrasangeet artist. He has
created his own style of singing Tagore’s songs. As per
his statement, he used to listen to the songs sung by
famous Rabindrasangeet artists, but never copied
them. His style of songs has really enriched the
subtleness and mood of
Rabindrasangeet.
Sri Samir Das is a veteran
Rabindrasangeet artist in Tripura, as well as he is an
ideal and successful teacher of Tagore’s songs. For last
40-45 years he is teaching Rabindrasangeet, and a
number of students have learnt Rabindrasangeet from
him. Many of the eminent Rabindrasangeet artists of
present age in Tripura have learnt from him. He is loved
and respected by his students.
Since 1976 Sri Samir Das has
established his school for learning Rabindrasangeet,
in his own house. The name of his famous school is ‘SURAJHARNA’.
His personality and his dedication for Rabindrasangeet
have attracted many people from the state and outside. We
offer our gratitude to this living legend….
